ANNUAL REPORT 2023-2024
 Note from the TISAR Team

As we look back on 2023, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude for the strides we have made together at TISAR. This year has been a testament to the resilience, strength, and unwavering spirit of the transgender and gender-diverse community in West Bengal and beyond. This annual report is a summary of our work as an organisation in the last financial year but it is also about thousands of individuals and institutions who contribute their money, material and efforts, hoping to make a difference in the world.

2023 was not without its challenges. Navigating bureaucratic hurdles for transgender certification reminded us of the systemic barriers that persist. Yet, it also marked a historic moment for our organization as we successfully conducted the first-ever transmasculine-led sensitization program in a government office in West Bengal. It was a powerful example of how collective action and dialogue can foster understanding and bring about change.

Sports became a unifying force for us as we represented West Bengal in the National Trans Cricket Tournament. Employment opportunities expanded with six transmen joining Flipkart, a remarkable step toward economic empowerment and inclusion. We also celebrated trans visibility through events like the Rainbow Ramp Walk, Bijoya Dashami, and Transgender Day of Remembrance, amplifying our voices and stories in spaces where they are often unheard.

                                                                         ANNUAL REPORT 2023-2024

Our collaborations with allies, including the AllBengal Men’s Forum and Humsafar Trust, have been pivotal. From addressing transmasculine mental health challenges to organizing free camps for transgender certification, these partnerships have strengthened our mission to create a more inclusive society.

As the year ends, I am reminded of the progress we have made and the work that still lies ahead. TISAR’s journey is one of breaking barriers and creating spaces where every transgender individual can thrive with dignity and equality. This mission is not ours alone—it is a collective effort fuelled by the support of allies, friends, and the community.

Thank you for walking alongside us, believing in our vision, and helping us build a brighter future. Together, we will continue to challenge norms, inspire change, and empower lives.

D.M. OFFICIALS SENSITIZATION T.G CERTIFICATE

As part of TISAR’s commitment to advocating for the rights of transgender and gender-diverse individuals, we took the initiative to support community members in obtaining their transgender certificates. On 27th January 2023, a group of 20 transgender individuals, guided by TISAR, went to the North 24 Parganas District Magistrate’s office for physical verification—a critical step in the certification process. The process was not without its challenges. We encountered several obstacles during the verification, but through constructive dialogue with the District Social Welfare Officer (DSWO), some of these issues were resolved. Significantly, this visit marked a historic moment in West Bengal, as it was the first time that a collective of trans men conducted a sensitization session within a government office. The session aimed to foster understanding and empathy among government officials about the struggles faced by transgender individuals, paving the way for more inclusive administrative practices. Despite the hurdles, the outcome was positive—most participants successfully obtained their transgender certificates on the day, marking a significant milestone in their journey toward identity recognition and empowerment. This achievement underscores the importance of collective action and advocacy in dismantling barriers and creating systemic change.
