RAHUL MITRA Founder and Managing Director

Rahul Mitra is a visionary leader and passionate advocate for gender equity, diversity, and inclusion. As the founder of TISAR (Transmasculine Initiative for Solidarity, Advocacy, and Resistance), Rahul brings a wealth of lived experience and resilience to his work. A proud transgender man and a relentless gender rights activist, Rahul has been at the forefront of dismantling systemic barriers faced by transgender and gender-diverse individuals in West Bengal and beyond.

Under his leadership, TISAR has grown into a beacon of hope, empowering marginalized communities through advocacy, education, and community-led initiatives. Rahul’s groundbreaking initiatives, such as employment inclusion campaigns, healthcare outreach, and cultural events, have inspired societal change while fostering acceptance and solidarity.

His commitment to justice and inclusivity has made Rahul a trailblazer in the LGBTQIA+ movement, and his empathetic approach ensures that every individual touched by TISAR’s efforts feels seen, heard, and supported.

SHYAMA DAS– Co-Founder and Director

Shyama Das is a dedicated and compassionate grassroots leader who serves as the Co-Founder and Director of TISAR. A proud transman with deep ties to the community, Shyama is known for his honesty, humility, and unwavering commitment to uplifting transgender and gender-diverse individuals at the grassroots level.

With a hands-on approach to advocacy, Shyama thrives in creating meaningful connections with marginalized individuals, ensuring their voices are amplified and their needs addressed. His passion lies in empowering grassroots transgender individuals through education, healthcare access, and skill-building opportunities, believing that true change starts from the ground up.

Shyama’s genuine love for his work and his ability to foster trust within the community have made him an indispensable pillar of TISAR. His efforts reflect the organization’s mission of solidarity, inclusion, and resilience, making him a beacon of hope and inspiration for many.

APARNA DAS – Co-Founder and Director

Aparna Das is a compassionate social worker and a driving force behind TISAR’s mission of advocacy, support, and empowerment. As Co-Founder and Director, Aparna’s deep empathy, exceptional understanding of community challenges, and outstanding counseling abilities make her an invaluable asset to the organization.

Aparna’s natural ability to connect with individuals on a personal level, combined with her unwavering commitment to social justice, ensures that every person she works with feels supported and valued. Her skill in counseling has helped countless transgender and gender-diverse individuals navigate life’s challenges, empowering them to reclaim their dignity and confidence.

OUR VISSION – Envisions a thriving, inclusive transgender community where individuals are celebrated for their resilience and have equal access to opportunities, rights, and dignity.

OUR MISSION – Our mission is to advocate for the rights, dignity, and well-being of transgender and gender-nonconforming people. We provide resources, support, and education to empower individuals and communities, challenge stigma and discrimination, and promote policies that advance transgender equality. Through activism, outreach, and collaboration, we strive to foster a more inclusive and affirming society where everyone can thrive regardless of gender identity

OUR STRTEGIES-

  1. Prevention and Healing Services for TG Persons

TISAR provides comprehensive prevention and healing services to transgender individuals, addressing mental health, trauma, and social stigma. Sexual Abuse, These services include Counselling, Professional support for mental well-being. Workshops: Empowering individuals with tools for resilience and self-care. Healthcare Access: Linking individuals to gender-affirmative medical care. Community Support: Safe spaces for sharing, healing, and solidarity. Through these initiatives, TISAR fosters recovery, dignity, and hope for transgender persons.

  • Training and capacity building of stakeholders

TISAR conducts specialized training to build awareness and foster inclusivity among stakeholders:  Sensitization on rights, identities, and inclusion to ensure respect and equity.

Gender-Based Violence: – Training on prevention, response, and survivor support to combat discrimination and abuse.

Justice: Empowering stakeholders to uphold fairness, accountability, and dignity in addressing marginalized communities’ needs.

  •  Public and policy Advocacy

TISAR advocates for:

Try to Promoting policies to prevent violence and support survive. Advancing legal recognition, rights, and social inclusion. Ensuring accountability and equitable access to legal systems for marginalized communities.

  • Health camp for transgender individuals

TISAR organizes health camps to provide gender-affirmative healthcare, including:

General health check-ups.

Hormone therapy guidance.

Mental health counselling.

STI/HIV prevention and treatment.

These camps ensure accessible, inclusive, and compassionate care for transgender individuals.

INTRODUCTION

Introduction to TISAR

TISAR (Transmasculine Initiative for Solidarity, Advocacy, and Resistance) is a community-based organization and a pan-Bengal transmasculine collective dedicated to the empowerment of transgender, gender-variant, and LGBTQ+ individuals. Headquartered in North 24 Parganas, TISAR works across various districts in West Bengal, focusing on the rights, livelihoods, and well-being of transmasculine (FTM) populations.

Though formally registered as a Trust, TISAR’s journey began as an informal collective of transmasculine individuals striving for visibility and equality. Over time, it has grown into a strong community with over 100 members, including a core team of 20 dedicated advocates.

TISAR has successfully amplified the voices of transmasculine individuals, making significant strides in representation, advocacy, and community-building to foster meaningful social change in the region.

TISAR Trust – Civil Welfare Society Collaboration

On 27th April 2024, TISAR Trust partnered with Civil Welfare Society to launch a free paramedical training course for transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals. This initiative aims to equip the community with employable healthcare skills and ensure job placements in hospitals upon course completion.

Key features:

Free, inclusive training tailored for the TGD community

Job support in the healthcare sector post-training

Focus on dignity, livelihood, and social inclusion

This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to empower TGD individuals through skill development and economic opportunities.

Justice and Accountability for Tamoghno Tapasidhya

On 30th May 2024, TISAR initiated a petition demanding justice for Tamoghno Tapasidhya and corrective action against misinformation and hate speech propagated by media outlets and police authorities.

An online survey was conducted, and a formal appeal Mail was sent where sixty transgender members signature to the West Bengal Transgender Welfare Board. Following our advocacy, the media outlets involved deleted the false reports and issued statements of regret.

Together, we stand for truth, accountability, and dignity.

Employment Inclusion

On 1st April 2024, TISAR celebrated a major achievement as five transmasculine individuals secured jobs at Tata Steel, marking a significant step in fostering workplace diversity and inclusion.

This accomplishment highlights the role of corporate commitment in empowering transgender individuals and underscores TISAR’s dedication to breaking barriers in professional spaces. 

Residential Workshop on Gender, Sex, and Sexuality

On 20th July 2024, TISAR Trust organized atransformative residentialworkshop in Digha, West Bengal, with 15 participants. The sessions focused on gender identity, sexual orientation, and social constructs, fostering understanding and advocacy for gender equity and sexual rights.

Interactive discussions and activities in a supportive coastal setting made this workshop a memorable and impactful experience for all involved.

Demand for justice

On 15th August 2024

TISAR members, the trans community gathered at Nandan Ranu Chaya Mancho to demand justice. To convey the message that rape has no gender. We stand together against violence, calling for equality, dignity and accountabilityfor all.

RAKHI UTSAV CELEBRATION

18TH AUGUST 2024 . Rakhi is a thread that binds stories of love, care, and protection. This Rakhi Bandhan, let’s celebrate the bond that unites us, just like the words in a book. Here’s to the stories we share and the memories we create. 

MAINSTREAM INCLUSION

On 21st October 2024, TISAR achieved a milestone in fostering inclusivity as its members were invited by MLA and Education Minister of West Bengal and Councillor of Ward No. 15, Mr. Debasish Banerjee, to inaugurate the idol of Lord Shiva in Dum Dum. This significant event symbolized strength, transformation, and inclusivity, honouring the divine energy that transcends gender and identity. TISAR’s presence highlighted the growing acceptance and integration of transgender individuals into cultural and societal spaces, marking another step toward a more equitable and inclusive society. The event in Dum Dum witnessed an overwhelming turnout, with a large number of attendees from the local community and the presence of several councillor from the South Dum Dum Municipality. This remarkable gathering not only celebrated inclusivity but also created a platform to present transgender issues with dignity and respect, fostering greater awareness and acceptance within society. It marked a significant step toward bridging gaps and promoting solidarity for the transgender community.

CRISIS FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

On 22nd September 2024, our trans brother Dustu faced a tragic accident and sustained serious injuries. Demonstrating solidarity and compassion, TISAR members came together to provide support during this challenging time.

Recognizing the financial hardships faced by Dustu’s family, TISAR extended financial assistance to aid his recovery. We sincerely thank all members for their unwavering unity and wish Dustu a swift recovery. This effort reflects TISAR’s commitment to standing by one another in times of need.

Subho Bijoya Festival

On 27th October 2024, TISAR organized a Subho Bijoya Celebration, bringing together our vibrant community to celebrate joy, resilience, and unity. The day was filled with dancing, laughter, and the sharing of delicious food, fostering love and togetherness.

This celebration highlighted our cultural roots and strengthened our bonds, reminding us of the power of unity and mutual support. Together, we continue to stand, celebrate, and uplift each other.

Advocacy Meeting with District Magistrate Office

On 28th November 2024, districts social welfare officers of North 24 Parganas invited TISAR to participate in a meeting focused on the Election Commission’s inclusion of TG/Hijra and other disabled individuals. The discussion aimed to strategize advocacy efforts for the transgender community’s equitable representation and participation in electoral processes. This highlights TISAR’s active role in promoting inclusivity and rights for marginalized groups. Important government officials and representatives from various organizations were also present at the meeting.

Participation in the Transgender Healthcare Conference on 30th November & 1st December2024 at KPC hospital

TISAR Trust had the privilege of attending the immensely insightful two-day Transgender Healthcare Conference on 30th November and 1st December 2024, organized by IPATH and ATHI at KPC Hospital, Kolkata. Representing TISAR, our members actively engaged in discussions, workshops, and knowledge-sharing sessions aimed at enhancing inclusive and comprehensive healthcare for transgender and gender-diverse communities.

This conference marked a significant step forward in bridging gaps in healthcare access and ensuring that medical professionals are equipped with the necessary sensitivity and expertise to cater to transgender individuals’ needs. The event reinforced TISAR’s commitment to advocating for equitable healthcare and collaborating with stakeholders to drive systemic change.

We extend our gratitude to IPATH, ATHI, and all the participants for fostering a space of learning, dialogue, and empowerment.

Voter Advocacy Camps for the Transgender Community

As part of our commitment to empowering transgender individuals with their civic rights, TISAR Trust organized two Voter Advocacy Camps to guide community members on applying for new voter cards and rectifying existing ones. These camps aimed to ensure that transgender individuals have access to proper identification, enabling them to participate fully in the democratic process.

During these sessions, participants received hands-on assistance with the online application process, document verification, and understanding their rights as voters. By addressing bureaucratic hurdles and providing necessary guidance, TISAR Trust continues to advocate for greater electoral inclusion and representation for transgender and gender-diverse individuals.

We appreciate the support of local authorities and volunteers who helped make these camps a success, reinforcing our mission of social and political empowerment for marginalized communities.

Mental Refreshing Program – 18th January 2025

On 18th January 2025, TISAR successfully organized a Mental Refreshing Program at Badu, North 24PGNS aimed at promoting mental well-being and emotional resilience among LGBTQ+ community members. The event was held in a safe and inclusive environment, fostering joy, relaxation, and community bonding.

A total of 80 participants from diverse LGBTQ+ identities enthusiastically attended the program. The day was filled with engaging games, music competitions, and various recreational activities that helped participants express themselves freely and de-stress from everyday challenges.

This initiative was designed not only as a source of entertainment but also as a therapeutic approach to mental health, recognizing the unique emotional burdens often faced by gender and sexual minorities. The overwhelming participation and positive feedback affirmed the importance of such community-based mental wellness interventions.

TISAR remains committed to creating more such safe, empowering, and joyful spaces in the future for the holistic well-being of the LGBTQ+ community.

TISAR–Plexus India Foundation Collaboration: 5 Survey Camps on Livelihood & Rights

TISAR, in collaboration with Plexus India Foundation, successfully organized five survey camps focusing on the livelihood and rights of transgender and gender diverse individuals. These camps aimed to gather vital data and understand ground realities to support advocacy and policy change.

The camps were held at the following locations:

1. Dum Dum – 22nd December 2024

2. Madhyamgram – 29th December 2024

3. Ballygunge – 12th January 2025

4. Barasat – 18th January 2025

5. Hooghly – 19th January 2025

A total of 120 transgender and gender-diverse participants took part in the surveys. These camps provided a safe platform for individuals to share their experiences and challenges related to livelihood, identity, access to rights, and social security.

TISAR is grateful for this impactful collaboration and remains committed to furthering the visibility, rights, and empowerment of the trans and gender-diverse community through data-driven interventions and community engagement.

Transgender Parents’ Meet – 11th February 2025

Organized by TISAR in collaboration with Humsafar Trust

On 11th February 2025, TISAR, in collaboration with Humsafar Trust, organized a Transgender Parents’ Meet aimed at building understanding and emotional support between transgender individuals and their families.

The event saw the presence of 8 parents and 7 transgender persons, who engaged in open-hearted conversations about experiences, challenges, and acceptance. The objective was to create a safe space for parents to express their thoughts, ask questions, and learn ways to support their transgender children more empathetically.

This intimate yet impactful gathering was a step forward in sensitizing families and the larger society to embrace gender diversity with love and dignity, ultimately helping make trans lives smoother and more secure within their homes and communities.

Trans & Queer Cricket Premier League – 2nd March 2025

On 2nd March 2025, TISAR hosted the Trans & Queer Cricket Premier League, a vibrant initiative to promote physical and mental well-being within the LGBTQ+ community and foster visibility in society.

Four district-level teams participated in the league, comprising 48 trans and queer players. The matches were officiated by two CAB umpires, ensuring a professional and spirited tournament environment.

The event witnessed an enthusiastic turnout of around 125 attendees, including community members and local residents, who cheered and celebrated the players. Through this inclusive sporting event, TISAR aimed to break stereotypes, create public awareness, and establish safe, joyful spaces for gender-diverse individuals.

The league not only boosted morale and fitness but also strengthened bonds within the community and made a strong social impact through visibility and public engagement.
